When Eleanor Millard, a young widow, bought Jackdaws Cottage, it was love at first sight – on her part anyway. Her new home was beautiful, ancient and secluded. Living there alone, her interest in its history developed into an obsessive curiosity about the farmer who had built it around the year 1580. She wanted to know all about him – what he looked like and how he lived.
